A Rich Diversity

People who attend our local Catholic parish have noticed that Saint Mary is a very diverse group of Catholics. This is only fitting, as Catholic means universal. We can view practices from different cultures as a rich blessing from which we can learn or we can resist and think “What are they doing to MY Mass/rosary/holiday.”

Changing lives one spoke at a time

One of the most exciting things I've heard this year is happening in Gilroy this week. Originally planned as a donation drive to collect gently used bicycles this Saturday, Aug. 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Spokes4Folks found that the response to the idea of donating bikes to give to folks in need of transportation picked up speed quickly. In light of such a tremendous outpouring of compassion, the volunteer group has had to start giving away bikes earlier than planned. What a good problem to have!

State Parks: the next 150 years

Natural beauty, open spaces and history are just a few reasons why we love our parks. The sense of stepping into the past or the thrill of pushing one's limits with mother nature are feelings hard to describe or put a price on, but for generations it has been these feelings that have kept our parks alive. As California commemorates the 150th anniversary of our vast state park system, it is critical that foresight to the next 150 years is kept in mind.

Water district: on advanced purification

In the midst of exceptional drought conditions, a new, locally controlled, drought-proof water source for Silicon Valley could not have come at a better time. The Santa Clara Valley Water District, in partnership with the cities of San José and Santa Clara, is celebrating the completion of the Silicon Valley Advanced Water Purification Center.
