Fourth of July: Snap, crackle, kaboom

The discordant medley of safe and sane fireworks echoed through my neighborhood off Luchessa Drive in Gilroy much to the annoyance of the roommates.

Local church changes denominations

The Morgan Hill Presbyterian Church has been an important part of the community for more than a century. Founded in 1897, the congregation has worshiped in a series of buildings until settling at its current campus at 16970 De Witt Ave. in 1968.

Wildlife comes close

Red-winged blackbirds in an oak forest? Gray foxes lounging on a backyard deck? Duck families bobbing in your swimming pool? An influx of seemingly abandoned fawns near homes and businesses?

Creative hands run in the family

Gilroy artist Marianne Eichenbaum grew up in Ansbach, a Bavarian town in Germany, where she watched the hands of her father create his own art—in cakes. As a young girl, she would spend hours watching his hands sift, stir and mold common kitchen ingredients—flour, butter, sugar—into delightful and delicious bakery treats.

‘In The Heights’

‘In The Heights” was nominated for 13 Tonys in 2008 and won four: best musical, best original score, best choreography and best orchestrations. It was also voted a finalist for the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for drama. With all these pluses, this show comes with high recommendations.

Holiday Weekend July 4th

During this long 4th of July weekend, please keep your cats indoors-only, and keep your dogs indoors as much as possible, too.  If you take your dog out, please keep him on a leash.  Firecrackers (the “safe and sane” legal version, or the illegal varieties) make a lot of noise, and most dogs and cats are very stressed by the noise.  So please keep them indoors, so they don’t panic, run away and become lost.

She’s Painting the Town

Judy Goularte, owner of Hollister Paint Company Inc., was a single mother with a 4-year-old son, Lance, and 10-year-old daughter, Ali, when she began to work for her family’s business in the early 1980s.

Create and bake a traditional pizza at home

I adore pizza. Not just any pizza, but traditional wood-fired Neapolitan style. Although I have never been to Naples to truly experience what many feel is a life changing pizza, I do enjoy similar styles that can be found at a few restaurants here in the South Valley. Making similar pizzas at home was a difficult task because I lacked the correct equipment, but I recently rediscovered a work around, which produces acceptable results.

Visit the spa everyday? Bathroom update ideas

Wouldn’t a visit to spa-like oasis every morning be a wonderful way to start your day? Since most of us can’t do that every day, updating your bathroom is a great way to give you that spa-like feeling at home. Whether you’re planning a complete bathroom remodel or just a cosmetic update, there are a few main areas to consider for the most impact. Updating your bathroom doesn’t have to be a huge, expensive and complete redo. Making some less expensive changes can make a big impact.

Congregations share outdoor worship

Nearly a year ago, members of two historic South Valley churches embarked on an exciting adventure. The Gilroy United Methodist Church (7600 Church St.) and the Morgan Hill United Methodist Church (17175 Monterey Road) began sharing co-pastors.
