Wine & Woofs
Our wineries are going to the dogs—but make no mistake, these dogs are lovers. Although they serve to guard the wineries’ liquid assets, their more important role is that of ambassador, greeting guests with a warm welcome and a wag of their tail. Tasting world-class wines amid beautiful vineyards just got even more fun.
Enjoy an ice cream treat
Twenty years ago this September, a little show set in New York City premiered on NBC. “Friends” became a hit , and we followed the group of six through their lives. The pilot episode featured a line that became the inspiration behind this week’s recipe, which presents a local product close to my heart.
Barbecue celebrates seniors
A quarter-century partnership between Gilroy Rotary Club and the City of Gilroy Parks and Recreation Department in support of senior citizens hosted its annual Senior Center barbecue at Christmas Hill Park. One-hundred-sixty Gilroy Senior Center regulars enjoyed a barbecue chicken lunch, garlic bread, beans, salad and dessert. According to Rotary senior barbecue chair Rick Patereau, the afternoon provided an opportunity for senior citizens to socialize, enjoy an al fresco meal, play cards, Bingo, board games and dance.
Make this the summer against boredom at the library
Ah, summer at last. Lazy afternoons. Fun at the beach. The sound of bees, baby birds and … “Mom, I’m BORED!”
Animals are link between humans, nature
For those wild animals that have been injured or orphaned, the Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center strives to mend their bodies and psyches and return them to their habitats, healthy and free. Unfortunately, other animals have suffered permanent injuries and their chances for long-term survival are negligible. But after considering certain conditions, such as the animal’s disposition, age and injuries, some of them may get a second chance and become a candidate for educational programs.
WHY NOT HERE? Part 1: farms, parks to the West and South
Other cities in our region are preserving and celebrating their agricultural heritage, and in the process creating centers where that pull together their community, offer fun, recreation and a draw for tourism. This posting and the next will show examples we can learn from:
MLB: Gimenez finding his groove in Texas
ARLINGTON, TEXAS—It’s been a busy year for Gilroy-native Chris Gimenez, but it hasn’t slowed him down. He left the Tampa Bay Rays behind and found himself back in the Bay Area after being claimed off waivers by the Oakland A’s just before Christmas. He was later claimed off waivers by the Texas Rangers at the end of March after being optioned by the A's and has been making his presence known in Arlington ever since.
Being a dad is a dangerous job
When I was a little girl, every single weekend my father risked his own life to ensure that my sisters and I were safe. That’s because every single weekend he took my sisters and I to the ice cream store and bought us cones. And then he willingly took the biggest risk ever and taste tested our ice cream for us to make sure it wasn’t “poisoned.”
