DEAR EDITOR:
Oh, my gosh, can you believe the audacity of the Valley Transportation Authority? Wednesday’s issue of The Dispatch quotes Supervisor Don Gage as saying that we should re-allocate funds for BART rather than possibly creating a savings account that moves us toward the BART goal as dictated by voters.
And “one note” VTA CFO Scott Buhrer insists that the VTA’s only hope is to find additional revenue sources; aka tax increases. And, finally, there was the “correction” in The Dispatch on Friday disclosing that the annual operating deficit of the VTA is $1 million. This is “ENRON-like” mismanagement for an organization with annual budget of $327,000,000.
Fellow taxpayers, here is the simple math on VTA operations, every time someone else pays 15 cents to use VTA services, you pay 85 cents to get them to their destination.
Mr. Gage, Mr. Buhrer, as taxpayers we are all accustomed to grossly inefficient government enterprises. However, as citizens we become furious when fiscally insolvent government enterprises are also morally bankrupt and lack the capacity to adequately reflect the will of the people.
Wake up and smell the diesel, the current VTA is out-of-control, and lacks both the vision and the integrity to lead our transportation needs into the new millennium.
If the VTA Board of Directors lacks the will to replace the inept management of the VTA, perhaps it is time for the people to step forward and recall the VTA Board of Directors. Either way now is the time for action!
