Police engaged in a vehicle chase in pursuit of a Gilroy man with a $100,000 warrant at 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday, which ended in a car crash that smashed a parked vehicle on Gaunt Avenue.
“Dear Red Phone, I want to know if you could put something in about the bridge on Howsland Street near Church Street. There's a bunch of garbage and a bunch of drug addicts that live under the bridge. I want to know why the city and Gilroy Police Department have done nothing about it. Thank you.”
It’s been an interesting week for Gilroy crime. Besides the usual business of robberies, burglaries and assaults, police responded to a handful of incidents including a man roaming around Gilroy exposing himself to women, and reports of the levee on Lewis Street being set on fire. Here are a few of those events:
An unknown suspect threw a rock into the front glass door at Straw Hat Pizza on First Street and broke an arcade game to steal quarters. Officers discovered the burglary at 7 a.m. on Sept. 3. Quarters were all over the restaurant's floor. Nothing else appeared to be damaged or missing, said Police Sgt. Chad Gallacinao.
“Dear Red Phone, Why do people steal so much from Walmart? Seems like there's reports in the paper every week about people stealing all kinds of items, big and small, from Walmart. I hardly ever hear about thieves hitting up Target or Costco. Are their loss prevention people sleeping on the job? I guess if you want to steal, Walmart is the place to go.”
Arrests in Gilroy may soon be accompanied by an electronic “third eye” that objectively monitors the scene, keeping recorded tabs on the actions of the suspect, as well as the officers on the job.
