Men’s squad blown out by West Valley, 81-50; Women’s team
crushed by Foothill, 77-40.
GILROY – The Gavilan College men’s and women’s basketball teams both came up short on the road Wednesday night as the Rams faltered 81-58 to West Valley and the Lady Rams fell 77-40 to Foothill.

The men’s squad – which will try again to break its now 10-game losing streak with a Feb. 1 road game against Cabrillo at 7 p.m. – was led by freshmen Jody McAlpine (team-high 18 points), a Live Oak High grad, and Erik Nelson (12 points), a Gilroy High alum.

Sophomore point guard Jimmy Herrera added seven points, while freshman Steve Silacci finished up with eight points. Both Herrera and Silacci played high school ball at Live Oak High.

The struggling Rams were down by 13 at the break to West Valley – which lifted its record to 19-6 overall and 3-1 in conference play – and never recovered in the second half.

The Lady Rams (6-13 overall, 4-5 in conference) did not fare much better as they trailed by 16 points at the half and fell even further behind in the second half.

Freshman forward Keisha Webster, out of Gilroy High, led the way with a team-high 17 points, while freshman guard Stacey Perrien netted nine points and teammate Nicole Donley added nine points.

The Lady Rams will return to action Jan. 31 with a home game against De Anza at 7 p.m.
