Our mother, Leoda Floridene Hall Wagner, passed away peacefully after a long illness on Sunday November 27, 2016 at 9:55 a.m. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Jack Wagner; her children: David Wagner of Scotts Valley, Michael Wagner of Santa Clara, Annette Wagner of Mountain View, and Chelsea Wagner of Santa Cruz, and two grandchildren: Amy Wagner Leppin and Eleanor Wagner O’Brien. Leoda was born in Santa Cruz on July 8, 1932 and lived in Watsonville, Aptos, Santa Cruz, and Hollister. Her mother was Shirley Guylane Ward (Hall) Groff. Though her father was Joseph Hall, she was raised by Samuel Groff as his own daughter. She was heavily involved in women’s clubs and many charitable projects during her life. She was the president of the Young Ladies Institute (YLI El Pajaro Chapter), the Hollister chapter of the Rebecca’s, and the Hollister Women’s Club. One of their many projects included restoring the bells on El Camino Real. While raising her children, she also worked as a real estate broker in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties and was a partner at Wagner Real Estate in Aptos and in Hollister, CA as well. Leoda was a spiritualist and worked closely with Reverend Leona Richards of the Holy Grail Foundation where she was ordained as a minister. She taught classes in her home for many years. She loved to travel and visited many sacred sites in India, Egypt and the pyramids, Europe, Morocco, England and Ireland. Some of these trips were made with her children which was a delight to her. Leoda loved dressing up and socializing at a good party with all her friends around her. Her children are holding a celebration of her life on Sunday January 15, 2017, from 12-3pm at the Red Restaurant, 200 Locust Street in Santa Cruz where family and frien ds can share their stories of knowing Leoda. Merna passed away March 22, 2008 at the Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson, Ca. Merna is survived by her husband, Eugene Whittle of Modesto, Children Shelly Soule of Colorado, and Kenneth Whittle of Modesto, 4 grandchildren, and several neices and nephews.
Born in Oakland. John was an Eagle Scout, graduated from UC Berkeley where he was editor of the Blue and Gold and president of ATO fraternity, served as Captain in the Marine Corps during WWII, married Virginia Darling Hess, was a teacher and school principal, developed a ground-breaking gifted-children program, received a Masters from Stanford, raised a family in Redwood City, and enjoyed his last 42 years in Hollister.
Born in Cushing, OK, Helen attended college at Wichita State College and then Boulder Colorado Business College. She started teaching at the age of 17. She taught school in Kansas for eight years. She then moved to California and taught school in Riverside, and in 1961 she moved to San Jose where she taught school in the San Jose Unified School District. In 1980 she retired to Kansas.
