Pit bull attacks, injures boxer
Morgan Hill – A boxer attacked by a pit bull Thursday morning was undergoing treatment at South County Animal Hospital late Thursday afternoon, according to a hospital employee and Morgan Hill Police.
MHPD Cmdr. Joe Sampson said Thursday that both the boxer that was attacked and the pit bull were on leashes at the time of the 8:40am attack.
Angelica Avila, 57, of Morgan Hill, was cited and the pit bull labeled a “level 2” dangerous dog, one of three categories in the city code that restrict dogs.
“A Level 2 means the dog is deemed potentially dangerous,” Sampson said. “The dog must be kept on a leash or in an enclosure when not in the residence and must be muzzled.”
The attack occurred when Carmen Jones, 41, of Morgan Hill, was walking her female boxer down E. Dunne Avenue near Grand Prix Way.
On the opposite side of the road, Avila was walking the pit bull and a bulldog.
As they came closer, the pit bull pulled the owner into the street. Sampson said the pit bull was so strong that Avila could not hold it back, and the dog eventually broke the leash.
“Bystanders were stopping to try to help separate the dogs,” Sampson said.
Neither Avila nor Jones were injured, but the boxer suffered serious injuries, including cuts to the legs and two major gashes in her chest, Sampson said.
