Gilroy – Gavilan is determined to end the season with a flourish.
The Rams made it five wins in their last seven starts Tuesday when they came from behind to defeat West Valley College 5-3 in a Coast Conference contest in Gilroy.
Gavilan (14-26 overall, 8-15) spotted the Vikings a 3-0 lead in the top of the third, and then came roaring from behind.
Megan Smart started a two-run bottom of the third with a single. Amanda Perez bunted for a single and both runners moved up on Melissa Gaxiola’s sacrifice. Jen McBain hit into a fielder’s choice as the first run scored, and Amanda Rosevear singled in the second.
The Rams added three in the fifth as Perez singled, moved to second on Gaxiola’s bunt and scored on McBain’s single. Rosevear singled and Tiffany McIntosh slammed a two-run triple.
For the second time in two games, Gavilan beat a team that had beaten it twice before during the season. On Tuesday, the Rams came from behind to beat Hartnell, and they did the same against West Valley.
“We played well against them the first times we played them and outhit them, but each time we beat ourselves,” Gavilan coach Nikki Dequin-Thompson said. “It’s been a great week for us. I’m proud of the way the girls are playing, the way they’re hitting the ball and producing runs. They’re doing what they need to do.”
McBain pitched a six-hitter with two strikeouts. She also had two hits and two RBIs. Additionally, Perez and Rosevear had two hits apiece.
The Rams finish their season with a 3pm game Tuesday at home against San Jose City College.
