Ahead of Tuesday’s start to league play, the Gilroy girls basketball team got a much-needed win in very convincing fashion.

SALINAS—With 41 goals for Christopher this season, it’s no wonder Anthony Sammut earned the Mission Trail Athletic League’s top honors.

After a 12-6 win in the season opener, Christopher now has its eyes fixed on Live Oak. The Acorns, which beat Gilroy 31-21, and Cougars are 1-0 heading into this week and a win for either will put them one step closer to being South County champions. Christopher, which beat Sobrato, Live Oak and Gilroy last season, are the defending champs but it won’t be an easy task defending the title.

Brook Loesch went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, but Christopher High’s softball team suffered a 12-2, six-inning loss at Wilcox on Tuesday.

Olivia Tabron led all scorers with 18 points, but Christopher’s girls basketball team suffered a season-opening 44-39 loss to visiting Oak Grove on Monday night.

Sophomore forward Dillon Day scored 16 points to lead Christopher’s boys basketball team to a season-opening 74-64 win over visiting Soledad on Wednesday.

On paper, Friday’s Monterey Bay League Gabilan Division game between the San Benito and Gilroy baseball teams looked like a mismatch.

SANTA CLARA—Christopher was on the cusp of erasing a 10-point halftime deficit against Los Gatos when the Wildcats’ coach called timeout midway through the fourth quarter.

GILROY—The third quarter has been Christopher’s Achilles heel and Thursday night was no different as North Salinas mauled the Cougars 69-38 in the Monterey Bay League-Gabilan Division opener.
