Faiths Cooperate to Feed the Needy

The news media imply they are implacable enemies: Jews and Muslims. We read about and see suicide bombings and retaliation assassinations and feel there is no hope of peace among them.

‘Love, Loss and What I Wore’

Nora and Delia Ephron (sisters) took the book “Love, Loss and What I Wore” by Ilene Bacmerman, added stories of some of their friends and their own experiences, and came up with a delightful production that hits home with most women and can tickle the funny bone of the guys in the audience. Sadly Nora Ephron died this past summer and left an enormous library of plays and books. Best known are “When Harry Met Sally,” “Sleepless in Seattle” and this play.

One violin tune that inspires real sympathy

Anyone who has witnessed the students in the violin program at Antonio Del Buono Elementary School perform has to marvel at the discipline and talent. There are “wee” little ones who intently pluck the strings and slide across the instrument and there are the “older” students who are practiced and can “feel” the music. The program, born in 1999 and founded by teacher Lori Franke, is on the chopping block. Half the budget will vanish. That’s $17,000 gone. So, MayorAl and good guy garlic chefs Sam Bozzo and Gene Sakahara are throwing a dinner at 6 p.m. Friday (tonight) at the IFDES Lodge-Portuguese Hall at 250 Old Gilroy St. Call (650) 305-0168 for tickets or buy at the door. It’s $25 pasta, bread, salad and the amazing young violinists – plus the good feeling in your stomach that you get when you lend a hand.

Recently, Apple put out an ad on LinkedIn for a writer to make Siri (the iPhone virtual assistant) wittier. Um, hello? I parent a teenager. I can bite my tongue, talk like a teen (well, sort of), squeeze information out of a person who never wants to speak to me again and I can even explain the conjugation of several Spanish verbs, despite the fact that I took French.

Curtain Up: Take a fun trip into the macabre with ‘The Addams Family’

The Addams family has taken up residence at the San Jose Stage Theatre and everyone who visits is guaranteed a serendipitous, wild, weird, let-all-the-stops-out joyous experience with a little nostalgia thrown in for the baby boomers who will recall the TV series of the 1960s.
