A century’s worth of memories with Spareribs & Sauerkraut
Many of us have wonderful memories of holidays and everything they represent. Our religious devotion, celebrating with family and friends and traditional foods are just a few things we hold in our hearts. One of my favorite Christmas food memories involves my dad when he was in college. I now share that story and the special recipe, which has been part of the Mariani family's Christmas meal for well over a century.
Sharks erase 2-0 deficit to handle Bruins, 7-4
SAN JOSE – At least for one night at SAP Center, it’s not how you start but how you finish was the motto of the San Jose Sharks.Boston scored two early goals before the Sharks regrouped for four goals in the second period and a decisive 3-0 scoring margin in the third to outlast the Bruins 7-4 for their third straight victory. The Sharks play twice in Canada this weekend (Calgary and Edmonton) before starting a five-game homestand Tuesday against the Oilers.San Jose reached a season-high with seven goals, including two apiece from Tyler Kennedy, Joe Pavelski and Tommy Wingels.Kennedy was positioned in front of the Boston crease when Matt Irwin, coming onto the ice on a line change, powered a low shot that Kennedy nudged into the net for a 5-4 lead 3:02 into the third period. The teams were skating four aside midway into the third period when Brent Burns found Pavelski with a pass from the neutral zone. South Valley Personality: Meet Cynthia Stocker
If I had to use one word to describe Morgan Hill resident (and Santa Clara County social worker) Cynthia Stocker, it would be “passionate.” Or “dedicated.” Or “energetic.” Well, OK, let’s forget that idea because one word doesn’t do justice to this animated, community-engaged woman.
Questions abound about new streetlamp light bulbs in town
I observe the City of Gilroy is switching streetlights from the kind with the orange glow to LEDs and have several questions. What is the replacement cost of each new light being installed? What is the monthly electrical operating cost of a new vs. the old style streetlight? Are the citizens going to see a cost savings in the first year of operating the lights? Will the city be able to recoup the cost of the old lights by selling them to another municipality and not just dumping them in the trash? How many hours of operation should a light provide before the bulb or LED will need to be replaced? Is PGE helping cover part of the cost of replacing? Thank you for investigating.
Community generosity fuels migrant toy drive
For the past two years, Gilroyans Lionel and Marilyn have inspired me by their example of selfless giving and what Christmas truly means at a time of year when wages are at their lowest for field workers and the livelihood of migrant families is at its most precarious.
