GILROY – George Alvarez, 22, of Salinas has accepted a plea agreement for the felony counts of rape and oral copulation and robbery, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

Alvarez raped a 16-year-old female gas station attendant May 10 in the wee hours of the morning at the Chevron Station located on Monterey Road near U.S. 101. Alvarez was caught on tape, and the networks broadcasted his image on television. A deputy in Monterey county recognized Alvarez as someone already in custody on a separate rape charge that occurred in Salinas on May 4.

By a stroke of luck, Gilroy Police Department detectives found Alvarez wearing the same clothing in jail that was seen in the videotape. Police were able to collect all the necessary evidence in less than 48 hours, according to Sgt. John Sheedy of the GPD.

Alvarez has already been convicted of the Salinas rape, and he will be sentenced for the Gilroy assault in mid-June. A sentencing date has not yet been set. Pursuant to the plea agreement, Alvarez will serve a minimum of 25 years to life in prison.
