The Gilroy girls basketball team is off to a hot start in league play.
The Mustangs topped Monterey 46-24 on the road Thursday to improve to a 2-0 record in league play (5-6 overall).
Adina Valencia and Maddie Cox led Gilroy with eight points a piece.Â
The Mustangs will return home to host Pajaro Valley at 7 p.m. Tuesday.Â
BOYS BASKETBALL
Alisal hands Gilroy first league loss
It came down to just six points between Gilroy and Alisal Friday, but unfortunately for the hosts it didn’t go their way.Â
The Mustangs fell 58-52 to Alisal at home, putting them at .500 (1-1) in league play.Â
Travis Moulden led the team with 17 points, including two 3-pointers. Zach Loo added 16 points.
Gilroy (5-9, 1-1) will look to rebound against Pajaro Valley at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Watsonville.Â
Oakwood tops San Jose
Oakwood built up a 24-point lead at halftime and coasted to victory from there on out.Â
The Hawks topped San Jose High School 58-34 Saturday on the road, improving to 12-2 on the season.
Gilroy opens league with ‘W’
It was a back-and-forth game between Gilroy and Watsonville in the first half Friday, but the second half belonged to the Mustangs.
Gilroy broke a 2-2 tie and took control of the contest after the break to cruise to a 4-2 win over the hosts for its first win in Monterey Bay Gabilan League play (2-5, 1-0).Â
Samantha Gonzalez broke the tie off a free kick just outside the penalty area. Gonzalez put the ball into the right corner, just out of the reach of the Watsonville goalie.Â
Gilroy capped off its scoring in the 80th minute off a corner kick from Agust Gomez.
Gonzalez connected with Chelsey Robles for the first score of the game in the 16th minute, but Watsonville was able to tie up less than a minute later.Â
Gomez found Connie Contreras later in the first half to help Gilroy regain the lead, 2-1. But once again Watsonville was able to tie it up just five minutes later for a 2-2 tie heading into halftime.
Gilroy will play at 5 p.m. Wednesday at San Benito.Â
WRESTLING
Cougars 3rd at Firebaugh
Christopher saw four wrestlers walk away on top Saturday, giving the team a third place finish at the Firebaugh Invitational.
Felipe Duenas (106), Jimmie Lopez (113) and Alex Garcia (160) all earned first place finishes at the meet.Â
Jacob Myers (152) finished second, Adam Mena (126) took third while Keanu Dominguez (132) and heavyweight Navi Pannu were fifth.Â
